SHINE/CDRS Pakistan is assisted in its mission by a competent group of physicians, financial and IT specialists, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists, under the leadership of a non-profit professional with a close association with Pakistan. The Board of Directors is assisted by an advisory group of business and healthcare experts.

Asim Ashary(CFO)

Asim Ashary is founder and CEO of Manhattan Data, Inc. (MDI), a healthcare administration outsourcing company based in Irvine, California. Prior to MDI, in 1999 Asim co-founded ppoNEXT, Inc. He is a senior healthcare executive with two decades of experience in business operations, claims administrations, marketing, finance and MIS operations. Prior to co-founding ppoNEXT, Mr. Ashary has held senior executive positions with BPS Healthcare, Orange Coast Managed Care, Equicore Health Plans, Cigna Health Plans and Maxicare Health Plans. He has an MBA degree from Institute of Business Administration, in Pakistan, and has completed CPA coursework offered by AICPA.

Adeela Ahsan

Dr Ahsan is an internist currently practicing medicine in Irvine, California. Dr Ahsan received her Medical Degree from the prestigious Aga Khan Medical University in Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine from St. Mary's Medical center in Long Beach and Harbor-UCLA Medical center. She received an additional year of training in Gastroenterology from UCLA. Dr Ahsan is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her main interests are Geriatrics, women's health and primary care. She worked with Todd Shea in Chikar, Kashmir in the earliest phases of disaster relief and has continued to maintain her affiliation with and support for the organization.

Farzana Naqvi

Dr. Farzana Naqvi, Diplomate American Boards of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism, has been in clinical practice since 1996. She completed her residency from St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, New York in 1992, followed by Post Graduate Research in Nephrology from the University of California, Irvine in 1993. Dr. Naqvi completed her Endocrinology fellowship from UC Irvine in 1995. Her Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery is from Sindh Medical College, University of Karachi. Farzana is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Endocrine Society, as well as the American Associaton of Clinical Endocrinologists. She has travelled to Pakistan to help provide medical relief in earthquake affected areas, and is actively involved in fundraising efforts for SHINE/CDRS to provide health care in Azad Kashmir.

Laila Karamally (CEO, Secretary)

Laila Karamally is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s School of Social Work and has spent the last 15 years working closely with non-profits active in various fields, in Pakistan and the United States. She completed her Bachelors from the National University of Singapore and went to work as a journalist with a business daily. In 1991, she moved to Pakistan and begun a career as a leading print and broadcast journalist. At this time, she also served on the board of the Human Rights Education Program and volunteered with with several causes.
In 2001, she resettled to Irvine, California where she now lives. She has served with agencies in the Orange County area engaged in providing services to underprivileged families and children, including Children and Families Futures, the Illumination Foundation and Families Forward.

Salman Naqvi

S. Salman Naqvi is a leader in the field of Pulmonology with more than 20 years of experience. He serves as the Chief of Staff at Kindred Hospital in Westminster, California, and the Medical Director of the Cardiopulmonary Department and the Subacute Unit of Costal Communities Hospital. Dr. Naqvi completed his residency from St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in New York City in 1992, and Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship from University of California, Irvine in 1995. Beside his numerous appointments, Dr. Naqvi has a private practice in Orange County since 1995. Since October 2005, he has been an instrument part of Relief International’s(RI) and CDRS’ earthquake relief efforts in Pakistan. Along with his wife, Dr. Naqvi has travelled to Pakistan to work in health clinics in rural areas. He has also played a major role in raising funds for the SHINE/CDRS Hospital, medical units in Azad Kashmir, and RI libraries in rural schools across Pakistan.

Adil Karamally

Adil Karamally comes from an entrepreneurial background with experience in a range of
industries including industrial products, logistics, supply management, textiles, mass market
consumer products, and mechanical engineering. He has held leadership positions in finance,
acquisitions, restructuring, product sourcing, logistics and operational management.
Adil is currently President and owner of Pro Star Mechanical, a mechanical engineering
company specializing in water heating, air conditioning and energy control systems. Adil is also
CEO and sponsoring partner of Meridian Properties LLC, a real estate management and
development company, and managing member of OC Healthcare, a healthcare investment
partnership that has investments in a group of Orange County hospitals. He also continues to be
involved in his family’s industrial sales business in Pakistan. Adil Karamally has an MA in
International Relations, as well as an MBA in Finance, from the University of Chicago.

Seema Iqbal Hassan

Dr. Hassan is an alumnus of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and belongs to the charter class of Certified Public Health specialists in the US. She received her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from Sindh Medical College in Karachi,Pakistan and completed her internship at St. Luke’s -Roosevelt Hospital in New York. Much of her work experience has been at the Aga Khan University Hospital. Karachi, as a medical and research officer and later as the coordinator of the cardiology sections preventive “Smart Heart Program” where she was instrumental in organizing public health awareness programs, World Heart Day events from 2003-2005, conducting patient education classes for those undergoing cardiac ehabilitation, and planning and implementation of a school health program that was piloted in two middle schools. She is a member of the Global Health Council. Dr. Hassan joined the board of advisors of CDRS after moving to Irvine, California and is involved in grant writing and program planning.

Organization
SHINE/CDRS operates its office and main medical facility in a four-level concrete and steel reinforced home in Chikar that survived the earthquake in 2005. The agency is assisting the AJK Secretary of Health’s office to re-establish a permanent rural health center (RHC) with first rate pediatric, mother/child and women’s health facilities, as well as installation of x-ray, ultrasound and lab capabilities by mid 2010.
Our primary healthcare services are available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, while the Emergency Care facility is open 24 hours. Other than the Chikar RHC, the agency provides logistical and financial support to 10 other facilities in the surrounding valleys. A storage depot for medications and supplies is being maintained in the village of Ghari Dupatta.
As of April 2009, SHINE registered as a public benefit corporation under California law, and maintains an office presence in Irvine, California. In January 2010, SHINE/CDRS initiated its first international deployment to Haiti, following the devastating earthquake there.
Currently, SHINE/CDRS has an operational staff that includes a medical staff of 15 (including 5 male general practice physicians, 1 female gynecologist, 1 nurse, 4 emergency medical technicians and 3 lady health visitors, 1 medications dispenser) and an administrative/support staff of 11 (including 1 Executive Director, 1 Accounting Coordinator, 1 field operations director, 1 assistant field operations director, 1 inventory control coordinator, 1 sanitation/maintenance manager, 3 support staff, 1 chef and 1 sanitation/maintenance worker). Also, volunteer physicians from the United States and Pakistan continue to travel to the Chikar area to share their expertise and knowledge and provide healthcare to the community.
