Despite no college education or a medical background, a rugged American named Todd Shea runs a charity hospital in Kashmir, where a 2005 earthquake killed 80,000 people.
Health Education
School-age children in the developing world are heavily affected by worm infestation and deficiencies of macro and micro nutrients such as proteins, iron, iodine, zinc and vitamins leading to underweight, stunting, anemia, increased susceptibility to infections and cognitive impairment , all of which affects their physical and mental development. Healthier children stay in school longer, attend more regularly, learn more and become healthier and more productive adults.
The on-going self-sustainable healthcare pilot project includes a health screening of school children and regular deworming and micronutrient supplementation after parental consent in two union councils in District Muzzafarabad. In addition, SHINE/CDRS works closely with schools and their communities to ensure proper sanitation through building latrines, appropriate hand washing facilities and access to safe drinking water. Also through education, students learn how to adapt their daily habits to improve their health, nutrition and hygiene.
